Habit

Western AU

At night, when the dim veil of darkness enveloped all of any living beings, and Amelia will have already curled herself peacefully up in a nice warm blanket wrapping around the twins' shared bed, Emilia will keep her eyes wide-open, staring up at the ceiling. Then she will mildly leave her bed, gliding toward the glass door leading to the balcony, and just simply stand by the sill, look up at the hovering skybound space. Whether there are twinkling star pieces scattering every here and there, or there are fluffy yet gloomy clouds covering the dark sky, she still gives it such full concentration that time's existence is no more a matter.

Much like the dolls kept behind the thick glass, watching the outside world is truly the only fancy of theirs. However, while Amelia loves the lively and brilliant sceneries being overlaid by bright sunlight during day time, Emilia is captivated by the halcyon and soundless features of the night. Why? She does not know, she is just fond of it.

"You and the moon are somehow similar, Emi." - The younger of the twins used to say to her sister.

Emilia laughed: "Maybe we are both isolated in our own realm?"

"No, I mean, you are such a..uhm... an incredible person!" - Amelia threw her arms up as if trying to describe something great and enormous.

And Emilia realized, sometimes, her sister was so innocent that it was too hard to understand her.

The habit of waking up at midnight and only going back to sleep when far to the eastern horizon the sun starts to appear, is an extremely bad manner. Even so, Emilia does not care. Every morning at sharp 7, a housemaid is always there in front of the finely carved wooden door to knock on it with profound respect to wake the two miladies up, preparing for an exactly-the-same-as-always day. Emilia is always the one who replies to the maid's call. Amelia then begins to turn over and roll off the comfortable bed, then sits up in half-sleep state, rubbing her eyes, surely still believe herself being inside a dream about some "outside world" that she never has a chance to step into.

"One day, Father and Mother will allow us to get in that marvellous place!" - Amelia believed, and Emilia could only smile.

Amelia imagines the outside world a marvellous place as it is full of things she has always been taught about but never once experienced, and she desires to get to know them more. However, Father and Mother said that, world is nothing less than a wolf's lair full of dangerous threats awaiting to eat alive any naive sheep that wanders too close. As for Emilia, being a more matured and thoughtful person, the magnificent place out there is much more similar to a cup of black coffee. Bitter, yet somehow alluring.

Coffee is Emilia's favourite, especially black ones. As hot and concentrated as better, without any added flavours.

Since the day Father and Mother locked them inside this mansion, Emilia has built the habit of waking up at midnight, heading to the window, hoping to catch even the smallest sign of the two persons who gave birth to her and Amelia; and since she accidentally tasted the harshness of such ruthless truth kept inside every dark, thickened drops, she has unconciously fallen in love with this commonly disliked drink.

Sitting at the luxurious breakfast table, having a meal together before continuing the monotorious passing days, Amelia pouts as she asks Emilia: "You drink it again! I don't understand how can you find such a thing in coffee?".
